1987.
May 24-27, 1987 was the Golden Gate Bridge’s 50th Anniversary. Approximately 800,000 people walked to celebrate. A waterfront pageantry at the Presidio, a parade of classic and vintage cars crossed the bridge, historic ships and aircraft sailed under and flew over the bridge, there were fireworks and the bridge towers were illuminated.
1988 was a year of remarkable advancements in science and technology. The discovery of the first exoplanet orbiting a pulsar, opening new avenues in the search for extraterrestrial life. The first transatlantic fiber optic cable, the TAT-8, became operational which significantly improved global communications. The U.S. Air Force unveiled the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, a technological marvel in military aviation. The Human genome project began. Aiming to map the entire human genome and revolutionize genetics.
January 22, 1987. Annual Congregational Meeting. Moderator: Pastor Mark Hollingsworth Elders present: Tom Wicks, Mary Anne Schaupp, Don Warren, Henry Van der Stoel. 21 members were present.
A review of the 1986 financial report was accepted. The Pastor’s salary was reviewed. A motion by Melissa Mast to give a 5% raise. Motion carried. The 1987 budget was reviewed and discussed by the congregation.
Nominations for Officers for 1987. Class of 1988 - Henry Van der Stoel, Tom Wicks (clerk), Ellen Peckham. Class of 1989 - Joe Haden, Linda Mitchell, Mary Anne Schaupp. Class of 1990 - Tammy Fullerton, Jeanne Han, Gerry Warren. Treasurer - Don Warren. Memorial Fund Secretary/Treasurer - Eileen Raymond. Financial Secretary - Donna O’Kane. The new Elders were elected by a unanimous vote by the congregation. They will be ordained on February 8th.
Meeting was closed with prayer by Henry Van der Stoel.
April 14, 1987. Session Minutes. Elders present: Mary Anne Schaupp, Henry Van der Stoel, Tom Wicks, Gerry Warren, Joe Haden, Ellen Peckham,Linda Mitchell. Pastor Mark Hollingsworth opened with a prayer and a reading.
Greg Giguiere and David Badley would like to join the church. They will be confirmed with the next class. A motion and second to accept the boys on a profession of faith. Motion carried.
On Easter Sunday, the following people will be baptized and confirmed: Melissa Dibble, Serena Denny, Jonathan Charles Navarro, Christopher Mitchell. To be confirmed only: Alan Dahm and Catherine Koeppen. A motion by Linda to accept them into our church on Easter Sunday, second and carried.
Christian Education, Linda reported that Linda Sammons will coordinate VBS. May 9th, a Bike-A-Thon - the kids will get sponsors and the money will be donated to Yolo Wayfarers. On June 7th, after church, there will be a picnic potluck at the church. A motion was made by Ellen to put a cross on the east wall of the Christian Ed building. Motion carried.
Roof Committee. Joe reported two bids have been received to re-roof the CE building. John Blanchard has volunteered to repair dry rot after the roof has been removed. The skylights will also be removed when the roof is removed.
A discussion about alcohol being served on the church grounds. A motion was made by Mark to restrict alcohol on church grounds. Second by Joe. Motion carried.
May 31, 1987. Special Session Minutes. Session met regarding presenting the roof proposal to the congregation for action. Don Warren reported that the bids are: Patton-Cooper Roofing $8,680; D & D Roofing $7,740. Dale Warren (Don’s brother) recommended the better roofing job would be by Patton-Cooper. The Esparto School Board also recommends them. All the stucco on one side of the building needs to be removed. Patton-Cooper is able to do this. A motion to accept the Patton-Cooper bid was second and approved. Mark moved that we have a Congregational meeting on Sunday, June 21st, to approve the recommendation and hire Patton-Cooper.. Motion second and carried. Meeting closed with prayer.
August 9, 1988. Session Minutes. Meeting was opened with a reading from Psalm 63.
Melissa Mast has requested the use of a couple of rooms for a one day per week pre-school. Session requests a letter of intent from her before making any decision. Nancy Hollingsworth requests a set of guidelines for babysitting during Sunday School, Church programs, Christian Ed meetings. Mark was referred to previous guidelines.
Session shall provide $150 for registration fees for Cathie Wicks and Tammy Fullerton to attend a youth conference for training. Motion was made, seconded and carried.
Brainstorming of church goals: Camp & retreats; Visiting people; Adult involvement; Mark to spend one Sunday per month at each church; Youth choir; Male involvement. Meeting closed with prayer.
September 13, 1988. Christian Ed. - Sunday school is under way. Videos have been provided for adult Sunday school. A class conference for Christian Ed teachers at a cost of $15 each. The leadership fund will cover the funding. Jeanne moved to accept, seconded and carried.
A discussion of the co-op preschool. A letter was read from Melissa Mast outlining her intent. There was a motion by Mark to limit the use of the kitchen to cooking only and by adults only. The letter was accepted with changes, seconded and carried.
Mark plans to spend one Sunday per month at each church. His first Sunday will be October 9th at Guinda and October 20th he will be in Esparto. This program will be reviewed in a few months and evaluated.
A motion was presented, seconded and approved to allow the use of the Social Hall as a polling place. There was a discussion of child care during church services. Gerry will follow up with the current sitters. Mike will set up sitter rules and guidelines. A letter of resignation has been received from Tammy Fullerton. Mark will be in contact with her.
November 8, 1988. Meeting was opened with a prayer by Mark. Mark requested that the Session or a panel review his work. He will obtain an outline for the reviewing committee to use. Laity Sunday is scheduled for November 20th. An Advent Family Faire will be December 2nd. Christian Ed is putting together a video tape for the Christmas program. There will be a Silver Tea and Boutique on November 19th. The Congregational meeting will be January 15, 1989. An Emergency relief offering for Bangladesh is being planned.
